The Golden Gala Pietro Mennea 2025 achieves Silver Level in the “Athletics for a Better World” Standard

The Italian Athletics Federation takes a decisive step forward in its sustainability journey

World Athletics has officially awarded the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea 2025 the Silver Level within the Athletics for a Better World (ABW) Standard, with an overall score of 87 points. This represents an increase of 61 points compared to the first assessment carried out in 2024: the highest improvement recorded globally since the introduction of the Standard. A result that confirms the structural growth of the sustainable management model developed by FIDAL and applied to Italy’s premier athletics meeting.

The path towards sustainability. Joining the Standard in 2024 marked a voluntary and strategic decision by the Federation: a phase of alignment with World Athletics’ international criteria, necessary to build methodology, governance structures and monitoring tools. In 2025, FIDAL transformed that initial framework into an integrated and measurable system, consolidating an approach that places sustainability at the core of event planning and delivery. With the Silver Level, the Golden Gala enters the restricted group of events certified at this level or above, positioning itself among the most virtuous events on the international circuit.

Sustainability governance. As in 2024, the 2025 pathway included the establishment of an Executive Committee for Sustainability, tasked with defining the strategy (here the full policy) and coordinating the implementation and monitoring of actions. Within the Committee, the presence of CMA – Creative Management Association Srl, acting as sustainability consultancy partner, ensured qualified technical oversight in the design, implementation and reporting process, guaranteeing methodological consistency and alignment with World Athletics’ international standards.

Nadia Battocletti as Sustainability Ambassador. Among the key new elements of the 2025 edition was the involvement of Nadia Battocletti as Sustainability Ambassador. The Italian athlete gave voice to the project’s values through a dedicated communication campaign across the digital channels of the Golden Gala and the Federation, amplifying messages related to environmental and social responsibility and strengthening the connection between sporting performance and commitment to the future.

Environmental responsibility. In terms of improvement compared to the previous edition, significant effort was devoted to measuring the environmental impact of the event. In particular, the calculation of the carbon footprint — estimated at approximately 184 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent –  marked a first structured step towards increasingly accurate and informed impact management. In parallel, the Golden Gala joined the international air quality monitoring project promoted by World Athletics, installing a Kunak device to measure key environmental parameters in real time, with data shared within the global database of the international federation. The pathway also fits within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Italian Ministry for the Environment and Energy Security and Italian National Olympic Commitee. The awarding of the national call for proposals aimed at promoting environmental sustainability projects among National Sports Federations acted as a methodological accelerator for the Federation’s work, enabling national ecological transition guidelines to be translated into concrete and measurable actions through the event.

The value of partnerships. The result achieved reflects a system-wide effort that actively involved Golden Gala partners and sponsors. The sharing of objectives and responsibilities through the event’s Sustainability Policy fostered continuous dialogue, which proved decisive. In this context, collaboration with Sport e Salute S.p.A. enabled the integration of the venue’s environmental policies with the parameters required by World Athletics. On the social side, the partnership with the World Food Programme strengthened the event’s solidarity dimension, confirming the Golden Gala as a platform capable of generating impact beyond sport.

The Sustainability Report. In line with its commitment to transparency, the Federation has published the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea 2025 Sustainability Report, a document detailing the actions implemented, the results achieved and the performance indicators. The Report is available on the official website and represents a tool for accountability and open dialogue with stakeholders and the sporting community.

Continuous improvement. The Silver Level represents an important milestone within a structured and ambitious journey. The analysis of data collected in 2025 provides the foundation for the development actions planned for future editions. Identified priorities include expanding emissions measurement by extending the scope of analysis to Scopes 1, 2 and 3 — particularly in relation to transport, procurement and logistics — as well as defining an environmental offsetting strategy. Particular attention will also be given to the full activation of food surplus recovery from hospitality services, a measure already planned in 2025 and intended to become a structural action in future editions. The Golden Gala Pietro Mennea continues as a laboratory of innovation and responsibility, contributing to the strengthening of an event model capable of generating value through sport — for people, for the territory and for the future.
