Golden Gala 2013 entitled to Pietro Mennea

The 2013 Golden Gala edition will be entitled to Pietro Mennea: “It was an obvious choice to make this tribute to a great champion – says FIDAL President, Alfio Giomia symbol of our Sports who was also the protagonist of the Golden Gala first edition after the Olympic gold in Moscow”. Mennea competed three times at the Golden Gala,  winning twice in the 200m, in 1980 and 1983. In 1980, at the very first edition of the meeting he ran 20.01 in the 200,  while Don Quarrie finished second behind him. Next 6 June Usain Bolt, 200m world record holder, will run on the Olympic Stadium track. Mennea scored 19.72 in Mexico City, a world record that stayed unbroken for 17 years between 1979 and 1996.
