World-class throws at the Compeed Golden Gala

On 31 May the world throw giants will compete in the Rome’s Olympic Stadium. The athletes expected to compete at the Compeed Golden Gala are discus stars like twice world champion Robert Harting who will take on Bejing 2008 Olympic gold and silver medalists Gerd Kanter from Estonia and Piotr Malachowski from Poland. In the women’s shot put the spotlight wil be on the fabulous clash between Valerie Adams and Nadzeya Ostappchuk. The women’s javelin will feature Olympic champion and world record holder Barbora Spotakova and Daegu 2011 World gold medallist Mariya Abakumova.

Men’s discus throw – It’s the best-quality discipline in the first part of this season after the most recent results. The strongest discus throwers will square off against at the Olympic Stadium. The line-up features twice World champion Robert Harting, who threw the discus to a sensational 70.66 in the last few days, a new PB and world seasonal best. The German giant will battle against his traditional rivals: Pole Piotr Malachowski (PB 69.83), reigning European champion and Olympic silver medallist in Bejing and at the World Championships in Berlin, Estonian Gerd Kanter (73.38, the third best performance in history), reigning Olympic champion and World champion in Osaka, two silver medals in Helsinki and Daegu, a bronze medal in Berlin and Lithuanian legend Virgilius Alekna (73.88, the second best performance in history), who won two Olympic gold medals in Sydney and Athens plus two world gold medals and one European title. The line-up also features Ehsan Hadadi, Asian record holder with 69.32 and world bronze medallist in Daegu. In the past clashes between these throwers Harting is an outstanding performer and is aiming at catching up with Estonian Gerd Kanter, the only athlete with whom he has a negative record (13 wins to 14). Harting prevailed in the last 10 meets over Alekna.

Women’s shot put – New Zealand’s Valerie Adams and Belarus Nadzeya Ostapchuk, the two best shot put specialists in the world will square off against in the Olympic Stadium. Adams dominated the last seasons winning three world gold medals in a row outdoors, two world indoor titles and the Olympic gold medal in Bejing. In the Daegu World Championships final Adams, who had already secured the gold medal, propelled the implement to 21.24 m. Ostapchuk dominated the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki and later stepped out the shadow of Adams only at the World Indoor Championships in 2010 where she beat the New Zealand’s shot putter with a sensational 21.70 m. Her palmares also features an Olympic bronze medal in Bejing, a European title and a silver medal, three more silver medals at the world Outdoor Championships and four world indoor silver medals. Adams leads over Ostapchuk 16- 15 and won their last eight battles. The Italian interest will be focused on National record holder Chiara Rosa.

Women’s javelin throw – It’s another competition of the highest level where the two superstars of the discipline will clash once again. Czech Republic’s  Barbora Spotakova, world record holder with 72.28 m and reigning Olympic champion, and World champion Mariya Abakumova, gold medallist in Daegu with 71.99 are used to battles with outstanding technical and competive level. Spotakova also boasts two world silver medals and one silver and one bronze at the European Championships. Beside her gold medal in Daegu Abakumova also won the Olympic silver medal in Bejing and the world bronze medal in Berlin. Abakumova won six competitions over Spotakova but three meets against the Czech athlete. Daegu World Championships bronze medallist Sunette Viljoen, African record holder with 68.38 and German Christina Obergfoll, former European record holder with 70.20 m and Olympic bronze medallist, twice world silver medallist and reigning European silver medallist, complete the fabulous line-up. 

TICKETS: The ticket sales for the Compeed Golden Gala are continuing. There are four price categories. The prices range from 5 Euros for the “curve and distinti” sector (with the exception of the finish-line in the South-West sector) to 30 Euros of the finish-line sector of the Monte Mario Main Stand. Tickets can be bought on the Internet via the TicketOne website (www.ticketone.it), the ticket company of the Compeed Golden Gala, in the official outlets and at the ticket offices of the Foro Italico’s Park.
