Golden Gala: Olympic shot put re-match in Rome

With just eight days to go to the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea, which celebrates its 33rd edition, the fifth leg of the IAAF Diamond League is shaping up as a fabulous athletics night in the Rome’s Olympic Stadium which will be highlighted by the men’s 100 metres with Usain Bolt. The Golden Gala will feature a star-studded line-up with athletes ready to shine in the Rome’s night. In a few events the Rome meeting will even feature some re-matches of the London Olympic Games.

The curtain will be raised with the men’s shot put which starts at 18.20. The line-up will feature the entire London Olympic podium and seven finalists led by Olympic gold medallist Tomas Majewski. The Polish shot putter won his first Olympic gold medals won in Bejing 2008 and doubled this feat four years later in London after an exciting battle with David Storl who won the Olympic silver medal at the age of 22. The battle, which is expected to go down to the last attempt, will also feature Olympic bronze medallist Reese Hoffa, a US shot putter from Kentucky, who boasts a 22.43 m personal best, Dylan Armstrong, fourth at the London Olympic Games and a 22.21 PB and Christian Cantwell, fifth in London and a 22.54 PB performer.

The starting-list is rounded out by two more London finalists Maksim Sidorov and US Ryan Whiting, reigning IAAF World Champion in Istanbul and winner of the first leg of the IAAF Diamond League in Doha with hi personal best of 22.28 m. In a true parterre de roi there are other top names US giant Cory Martin, Marco Fortes from PortugalLadislaw Prasil from Czech Republic, 2013 European Indoor champion Adam Kolasinac from Serbia and Bulgarian Georgi Ivanov. The strongest athletes in Rome are going to arrive in Rome.
