Pedro Pablo Pichardo jumped again over the 18 metres barrier and is now just 21 cm off the world record mark which looked to be the boldest goal to reach until recently. Pedro Pablo Pichardo leapt over the 18 metres barrier with 18.08m at the Memorial Barrientos in Avana yesterday. In his series he also produced three more big jumps (17.94, 17.93, 17.75). The world silver medallist added two cm to his fresh personal best of 18.06 set in Doha. In the history of the men’s triple jump the Cuban is the third best jumper in history behind Jonathan Edwards’world record of 18.29m and Kenny Harrison’s 18.09m set in 1996. Taking his 17.94m jump in his impressive seasonal debut on 8th May in Avana the average of his seasonal jumps is 18.02 ! It’s the length of a volleyball court. His next competition will be the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea on 4th June where he will take on Olympic silver medallist Wil Claye who also won the bronze medal in the long jump in London 2012. Claye knows well the Rome runway where he won in 2014 in the same year in which he set his personal best of 17.75 in Sacramento.
Pichard-Hop:“I think I can now jump 18.30. I want to win the world title in Bejing and the Panamerican Games and jump as far as possible”, said Pichardo. The incredible feat looked to have already happened on 15th May in on the hot runway in Doha. Both the young Cuban and Olympic champion Christian Taylor jumped over 18 metres. It was the first time that two triple jump specialists jumped beyond the magic barrier in the same competition. Pichardo, world junior champion and world silver in Moscow, achieved the impossible feat with 18.06m. Taylor, finished two centimeters behind, could not believe that. Nobody believes in wonders in sport until he experiences them, whether he is happy or disappointed. Pichardo says that he the mixture between the speed of legendary Jonathan Edwards and the technique of Kenny Harrison and Teddy Tamgho. Pichardo was born in Santiago de Cuba almost 22 years ago. Last year he got off to a great start but he was later disqualified for six months by the Cuban Federation because he interrupted his relationship with the coach of the Cuban athletics federation. In his come-back to competitions he produced two big jumps of 17.94 and 18.06m in 8 days, one more than the seven days of Creation. Then he improved his personal best to a jaw-dropping 18.08m yesterday in Avana. He improved the Cuban record more times in a very short period of time. He has a normal body. He is 1.87m tall and weighs 70 kg. His ankles are similar to springs or, it should be said, to catapultes. He inherited his dancing skill on the ruway from his mother, who is a dancer, or from his father, who was a 2.10m high jumper. At the moment the answer is in his extreme hop-step-jump technique. We can call him Pichard-Hop.
