Men's Discus: Robert Harting and Piotr Malachowski will renew their rivalry after 60 head-to-head clashes during their careers. The German, reigning Olympic and World champion, leads 43-17 against his Polish rival. They last clashed this year in Halle where the Pole beat his German rival by one metres (69.28 to 68.28m). It will another impressive line-up of the 2014 Golden Gala Pietro Mennea with another Olympic champion Gerd Kanter from Estonia, 2012 Olympic silver medallist Ehsan Hadadi from Iran and the other German Martin Wierig. The Italian athlete in the field will be Hannes Kirchler, who pulled off a series of good results in California with the best result of 63.33m on 24th April. The best results of the discus giant: Harting won the Olympic gold in London 2012 and won the last three World titles. Malachowski won the European title in Barcelona 2010, an Olympic silver and two World silvers. Kanter won the Olympic and the World titles and two World silvers, an Olympic bronze and two World bronze medals.
Women’s Shot put: Maori’s legendary shot putter Valerie Adams is worth the ticket prize. She won all the major global medals: four world outdoor medals (Osaka 2007, Berlin 2009, Daegu 2011 and Moscow 2013), two Olympic gold medals (Bejing 2008, London 2012) and three World Indoor titles. She is the only athlete who is able to achieve results only Sovier, German and East European putters could produce in the past. She set her PB of 21.24m in Daegu. She has put the shot beyond the 20 metres barrier for nine consecutive seasons and has kept her four-year unbeaten streak to 47 consecutive competitions. She produced her fourth best performance at the 2012 Golden Gala in Rome with 21.03m. She will face German Christina Schwanitz, World silver outdoors in Moscow and Indoors in Sopot, who put 20.22 twice this year, Chinese Gong Lijiao, twice World silver medallist and once at the London Olympic Games and Russian Yevgeniya Kolodko, who finished runner-up behind Adams in London “just” 22 metres off Adams. Representing the USA Michelle Carter, daughter of a former shot putter, who set a 20.24m PB and won the World Indoor bronze medal. Italian hopes will be carried by Chiara Rosa, who set a National record with 19.15m and achieved her best result in Rome with 18.63m two years ago.
Women’s Javelin throw: Slovenian Martina Ratej surprisingly won the first leg of the Diamond League in Doha with 65.48m, although she did not manage to improve the World seasonal leading throws set by Australian specialists Kimberly Mickle, World silver in Moscow and Kathryn Mitchell, who threw the implement to 66.83m and 66.10m.
