The Golden Gala Pietro Mennea has launched the “Towards Sustainable Development” project by formally adhering to the sustainability strategy of World Athletics, the global governing body for athletics, which calls for a concrete commitment to People, Planet, and Prosperity.
For the first time the event, which is part of the Diamond League circuit, has formalized its contribution to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda. In particular, 12 SDGs have been identified on which the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea has focused its activities with greater effectiveness by adopting an ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) approach, in compliance with European Union guidelines and also considering the key developments introduced by the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
The Strategy is based on 6 pillars covering multiple specific aspects of sustainability: Leadership for Sustainability, Sustainable Production & Consumption, Climate Change & Carbon, Local Environment & Air Quality, Global Equality, and Diversity, Accessibility & Wellbeing.
In addition to sharing the principles and goals of World Athletics, the event will henceforth be assessed against the Athletics for a Better World Standard, a rating developed by the global governing body to evaluate the sustainability of athletics events.
The goal for 2024, which can truly be considered a "year zero", is to promote the spread of a sustainability culture by initiating a process of awareness aimed at athletes, the public, journalists, sponsors, institutions, and other external stakeholders, starting with a shared set of values that has initially been applied within the organization itself.
Reporting on the sports, economic, social, and environmental performance and impacts generated by the event will be essential for developing a continuous improvement plan, enabling the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea to achieve long-term sustainable growth.
The entire process is coordinated by a dedicated Sustainability Team, with the support of CMA Creative Management Association Srl, a consultancy firm specializing in sports organizations with extensive experience in social responsibility for sustainable development related to sports.
