The count-down has started: the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea is on the launch pad. The spotlight will be on the 35th edition of the Italian capital meeting in the Rome Olympic Stadium on 4th June for the fourth leg of the 2015 IAAF Diamond League. The Golden Gala Meeting Director Luigi D’Onofrio is at work to put together the last details of the starting lists. Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce, the Jamaican sprinter who has dominated the women’s sprint on the world stage since the 2008 Bejing Olympic Games like Usain Bolt, has signed up to run the 200m, the distance where she won the Olympic silver and the world gold medal. Another new entry is US Jasmin Stowers, the revelation and the world seasonal leader with her impressive 12.35 which ranks her ther seventh fastest woman of all-time. She will take on a star-studded line-up which features the last two Olympic champions Dawn Harper Nelson (2008) and Sally Pearson (2012) and reigning world champion Brianna Rollins.
The most eagerly awaited star will be Olympic champion and world record holder Renaud Lavillenie who will defy the gravity in the stadium where Sergey Bubka and Thierry Vigneron clashed in an epic world record battle. Also in the spotlight will be the women’s high jump on the runway where Stefka Kostadinova broke the still unbeaten world record clearing 2.09m. The club of 2 metres specialists featuring Blanka Vlasic and Italian star Alessia Trost opposed to her historic rival Mariya Kuchina will jump in front of the Southern Curve. The Tevere stand will be the perfect place where fans will be able to watch the triple jump show which features young Cuban star Pedro Pablo Pichardo, who jumped over the 18m barrier, which represents the “Pillars of Hercules” of this discipline. Italian Fabrizio Donato, Olympic bronze medallist in London 2012, will be also in the line-up. The spotlight will be on the finish-line where US Justin Gatlin, who recently clocked a jaw-dropping 9.74 in Doha, will be chasing his third consecutive win in the 100m at the Golden Gala. In the women’s one-lap event Italian fans will cheer on 400 metres European champion Libania Grenot,.The competitions will start at 17.45 with the women’s long jump and the men’s shot put. The meeting’s main programme will start from 19 for what promises to be a scintillating athletics night.
RUNFEST AND PALIO DEI COMUNI – This year the Golden Gala will start earlier with the RunFest, a running event which be hosted in the Marble Stadium from 2nd to 4th June. Three days of activity which are open to everyone and dedicated to the world of running and to the lively universe of passionate runners. No less than thousand young students are expected to take part in the Palio dei Comuni, the 12x200 maxi-relay which will take place in the Rome Olympic Stadium on 4th June during the afternoon shortly before the start of the meeting. A series of Master competitions and two middle-distance under 20 races are confirmed in the pre-programme.
