Florence will host the 2023 edition of the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea. The Italian leg of the Wanda Diamond League, scheduled for Friday 2 June 2023, will be held at the "Luigi Ridolfi" stadium, a venue that has already successfully hosted the event in 2021. The choice was formalized by the president of FIDAL Stefano Mei during this morning's Federal Council meeting. "As you know, the Stadio Olimpico in Rome will not be available for the upgrading of the track for the 2024 European Championships - said the president - and the choice of Florence is the fulfillment of a process of dialogue with the institutions at all levels. It is a very high profile venue already appreciated in 2021. We have also evaluated the hypothesis of Naples, but the concomitance with the football championship and the impossibility of holding throwing competitions has made it impossible for this year”.
The Golden Gala Pietro Mennea 2023 will be the third meeting of the major international circuit, the first in Europe. An evening of stars, with champions from all over the world and the Italian one, who will go looking for points to qualify for the final in Eugene. In the program of the Florence event there are fifteen specialties: men’s 100m, 200m, 5000m, 110hs, high jump, triple jump and shot put; women’s 100m, 400m, 1500m, 3000m hedges, 400hs, rod, long jump, disc throw.
“No doubt, Florence is a top level pick”, meeting director Marco Sicari said today. “Both the Diamond League and the IMG expressed their approval in 2021, when the city was selected because of a first unavailability of the Rome's Olympic Stadium. Tickets for this great athletics night will be available soon, right at the beginning of next year. The disciplines being part of the programme clearly define the identity of the meet, and we are also planing to introduce some innovations on the presentation of the sport. It will be fun!”.
