Following the success of the Media Academy project, which is designed to nurture the next generation of sports journalists, World Athletics launched a pilot Academy programme for university students of sport management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why? One of the challenges for the one-day meeting organisers is to identify and recruit young talents. Proactive approach to apply the principle of World Athletics Media Academy to the needs of the organisers ended up in a close cooperation with a local university, giving students an opportunity to engage with our sport before making their final career decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rome was a natural choice for World Athletics. The organisers of the Wanda Diamond League Golden Gala set up a partnership with the Universit\u00e0 degli Studi di Roma \u201cForo Italico\u201d, whose campus is located just a few metres from the Stadio Olimpico, the venue for the Wanda Diamond League meeting. Support for the initiative was there from our very first meeting last October. Together, we brainstormed ideas, defined priorities, worked through the necessary administrative processes, and ultimately delivered a two-part programme led mainly by local experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first week of May was dedicated to theoretical sessions covering key aspects of event organisation delivered by Golden Gala meeting director Marco Sicari, the importance of sustainability, and an overview of today\u2019s media landscape and its challenges led by Riccardo Romani, one of World Athletics long-term mentors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second week was all about practical delivery. Fifteen students were integrated into the local organising team, supporting competition management, event presentation, sustainability initiatives, and media operations. Their contribution helped ensure the success of Thursday\u2019s Golden Gala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For every one of them, this was their first-ever international athletics event. Hopefully, it will not be their last.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
