He won in 2005 and in the last year, but he achieved his most prestigious win in 2013 when he beat Usain Bolt. The US sprinter recently clocked a jaw-dropping 9.74 in the opening leg of the Diamond League in Doha, followed by a dazzling 19.68 in the 200m in Eugene. The line-up also features Jimmy Vicaut who clocked 10.02 last week, 2003 world champion Kim Collins, 4x100 world record holder Nesta Carter. Also to watch out is US sprinter Mike Rodgers, who rivals with Gatlin at the start.
Golden Gala record: 9.76 Usain Bolt JAM 2012; Italian all-comers record: 9.74 Asafa Powell 9.74 Rieti 2007.
Olympic stadium, fast and furious on a very hot straight. The first to dip under the 10 seconds barrier was not anyone: Carl Lewis crossed the finish-line in second place in 9.93 behind Ben Johnson, whose 9.83 was later cancelled after the Canadian sprinter of Jamaican origin was disqualified because of his doping ban. It’s the controversial result of the 1987 World Championships. The remaining sub-10 times were set at the Golden Gala (23 times clocked by 9 sprinters). The list of names and performances starts with the Lighning Usain Bolt who clocked 9.76 on 31st May 2012 setting the meeting and stadium record but not the all-comers record as Asafa Powell clocked 9.74 in Rieti almost eight years ago setting the world record which remained unbeaten until Lightning Bolt improved it at the start of his era.
The most generous edition was in 2009 which featured seven sub-10 times on a golden night. In the heats Daniel Bailey from Antigua, a distant cousin of Bolt, clocked 9.96 ahead of Powell (9.98). In the other heat Tyson Gay ran 9.96. The final featured four men under the 10.00 barrier: Gay 9.77, Powell 9.88, Yohan Blake, called the Beast, 9.96 and Bailey 9.97. This is the best ever race for depth of results in the history of the Rome meeting which took place for the first time in 1980. The first sprinters who clocked sub-10 times in this meeting were Frankie Fredericks and Ato Boldon who were split by just one hundredth of a second with 9.97 to 9.98 in 1998
These are all the su-10 times in chronological order in the history of the Golden Gala: 1998 Frankie Fredericks (Nam) 9”97, Ato Boldon (Tri) 9”98
1999 Maurice Greene (Usa) 9”85
2000 Greene 9”97
2002 Greene 9”89
2005 Justin Gatlin (Usa) 9”96
2006 Asafa Powell (Jam) 9”85
2007 Powell 9”85
2009 Tyson Gay (Usa) 9”77 e 9”96 (h), Powell 9”88 and 9”98 (h), Daniel Bailey (Ant) 9”97 and 9”96 (h), Yohan Blake (Jam) 9”96
2010 Powell 9”82
2011 Usain Bolt (Jam) 9”91, Powell 9”93
2012 Bolt 9”76, Powell 9”91
2013 Gatlin 9”94, Bolt 9”95
2014 Gatlin 9”91
Powell leads the ranking with seven sub-10 times. This is quite normal for a sprinter who leads the overall ranking with 84 times under the 10 seconds barrier. Among the sprinters who are still in activity and one of the stars of the 2015 edition Justin Gatlin achieved the most dated win ten years ago as reigning Olympic champion. Gatlin has the chance to become the sprinter with more wins.At the moment he shares the first place with three wins together with Greene and Powell.
